The 2009 boys' mile illustrated just how hard it is to break the four-minute barrier. The field produced the fastest all-prep mile since 1997, the 18th fastest individual high school mile of all-time and two of the top 15 all-prep milers in US history and still fell a few seconds short of joining the Sub-4 list that still stands at only Ryun, Danielson, Liquori and Webb.
But the way is the goal as the expression goes and the fans in attendance and across the country watching the live video stream were rewarded with seeing the best of the 2009 milers take their shot.
NPR also found the attempt compelling and broadcast the a story on the boys' effort on Morning Edition the following week. Visit the NPR logo to listen to the audio clip.
